Two weeks off school sounds great in October. By December 23rd, it can feel like a very long time — especially when it's cold, dark by 5:30, and the new toys have already lost their shine. If you're a Lexington parent looking for ways to keep kids moving (and keep everyone sane) over winter break, here's a practical game plan.
1. Give the day a shape
Kids handle downtime better when there's a rhythm. A simple pattern — something active in the morning, quieter play after lunch, screens as a late-afternoon reward — heads off a lot of meltdowns. Even one "big" plan per day gives everyone something to look forward to.
2. Get the wiggles out early
Burning energy before lunch makes the rest of the day calmer. On mild days, a walk, bike ride, or park trip works wonders. On cold or rainy days, you need an indoor option with real room to move — that's where a ninja gym shines.
3. Turn the living room into a course
Couch cushions, painter's tape lines on the floor, a hallway "laser maze" of yarn, and a stopwatch turn an ordinary afternoon into a ninja challenge. Time each run and let kids try to beat their own record — it's surprisingly effective at holding attention.
4. Plan a few indoor energy-burners
At Ninjaletics, open gym sessions let kids climb, swing, and run real obstacles in a staffed, supervised space — a great go-to on days when the weather won't cooperate. (Check our holiday schedule before you head over, since hours shift around Christmas and New Year's.)
5. Book camp for the days you need coverage
If you're working through the break, our Winter Break Camp runs 9 AM – 3 PM on Dec 21–24 and Dec 28 – Jan 1 for kids ages 5–14. Book the full week for $250, or just the individual days you need at $75 — handy for working around holiday travel and family visits.
6. Keep it social
A big part of the "I'm bored" feeling is missing friends. Coordinating a camp day or open gym session with a classmate's family gives kids something to look forward to — and gives parents a breather, too.
The bottom line
A little structure, a lot of movement, and a couple of plans on the calendar go a long way. When you need a full day of active, coached fun, see our Winter Break Camp →
